7mm vs 5mm Knee Sleeves - Which Thickness Is Right for You? - Mammal Strength

7mm vs 5mm Knee Sleeves - Which Thickness Is Right for You?

The thickness of your knee sleeve matters more than most people realise. Get it wrong and you are either under-supported under heavy load or restricted in movements that need full range of motion. Here is a complete breakdown of 7mm vs 5mm - and how to know which one is built for how you train.

If you have spent more than five minutes looking at knee sleeves, you have hit this question. 7mm or 5mm? Which one do you actually need?

Most product pages will tell you the 7mm is for heavy lifting and the 5mm is more versatile - and leave it at that. That is true but not particularly useful. The real answer depends on what you are lifting, how you are moving and what you are asking your knees to do.

Here is the full breakdown.

What Does Sleeve Thickness Actually Do?

Neoprene thickness determines three things - compression, warmth retention and stiffness.

More thickness means more compression around the joint, more heat retained in the knee and more rigidity in the sleeve itself. These are all generally positive for heavy lifting - but they come with a trade-off. A thicker sleeve restricts range of motion more than a thinner one. At 7mm that restriction is meaningful. At 5mm it is much less noticeable.

The question is not which thickness is better in absolute terms. The question is which trade-off suits your training.

7mm Knee Sleeves - Who They Are Built For

The 7mm is the sleeve of choice for serious strength athletes who are regularly loading heavy and want maximum support from their equipment.

The thicker neoprene provides significantly more compression than a 5mm sleeve. That compression does two important things - it keeps the joint warmer throughout the session, and it increases proprioception, which is your body's awareness of where the joint is in space. Under heavy load, that heightened feedback can meaningfully improve movement mechanics and help you maintain better positioning through the sticking point of a heavy squat.

The 7mm is the right choice if:

  • You are squatting above 1.5x your bodyweight regularly
  • You compete in or train specifically for powerlifting
  • You train in strongman and need maximum knee support under heavy carries, yoke walks and log presses
  • You train in a cold gym or early in the morning and notice your knees take time to warm up
  • You want the maximum proprioceptive feedback available from a sleeve

Worth being clear about the trade-off - 7mm sleeves are stiffer. They take more effort to get on and off. Some athletes find them restrictive during the bottom of a deep squat. If full range of motion is critical to your sport or your technique, factor that in.

5mm Knee Sleeves - Who They Are Built For

The 5mm is the most versatile knee sleeve on the market. It sits in the sweet spot between meaningful support and genuine freedom of movement - which is why it works across a wider range of training styles than a 7mm sleeve.

You still get real compression and warmth retention. You still get proprioceptive feedback during loaded movements. But the sleeve moves more freely with you, which matters if your training involves varied movements, higher reps or anything beyond slow, controlled maximal lifts.

The 5mm is the right choice if:

  • You train across multiple disciplines - strength work, conditioning, CrossFit or functional fitness
  • You squat heavy but also need full range of motion during other movements in the same session
  • You are new to knee sleeves and want to start with the most adaptable option
  • You are returning from minor knee discomfort and want support without over-bracing the joint
  • You lift heavy but find 7mm too restrictive for your squat depth

What About 3mm Double Ply?

It is worth mentioning the third option in the Mammal V3 range - the 3mm double ply sleeve.

Double ply construction means two layers of neoprene bonded together. The result is a sleeve that is thinner in profile than a 5mm but delivers more compression than you might expect from the measurement alone. The 3mm double ply is particularly popular with Olympic weightlifters and CrossFit athletes who need genuine support but cannot sacrifice the range of motion that thicker sleeves restrict.

If you sit between a 5mm and something even more flexible, the 3mm double ply is worth serious consideration.

Does Material Quality Matter as Much as Thickness?

Yes - and it is worth understanding why before you buy.

Not all neoprene is the same. Budget sleeves are typically made from SBR neoprene - cheaper to produce, faster to break down and less consistent in the compression it delivers over time. As SBR neoprene degrades with use and washing, the sleeve softens and loses its shape. You end up with a sleeve that feels noticeably different after six months than it did on day one.

All Mammal Strength V3 Knee Sleeves are made from highest grade CR (Chloroprene Rubber) neoprene. CR neoprene is more resilient, more consistent and longer lasting than SBR alternatives. It is also why we are able to back every V3 sleeve with a 12-month product warranty. The material holds up - and if it does not, we replace it.
